Makanowitzky's pastels have sold to
buyers in Europe and across the U. S. Since moving to Maine from France
in l992, she has had 11 solo shows and over 20 juried shows in New
England, California, New York, and Washington D.C. She is a signature
member of the Pastel Society of America.
Her aim is not to reproduce a scene, but to
express the emotion it evokes. Her favorite subject is the sea, which
she paints in California in winter and in Maine the rest of the year. In
the words of one gallery director, "she is particularly noted for
the originality and magnificent color of her seascapes ... which can be
viewed on two levels, realistic and abstract, at the same time." In
the words of another, "Her paintings float back and forth across
the border of reality and unreality, always dominated by a strong
rhythmic flow with translucent depths."
Makanowitzky is represented on both coasts: in
California by Ventana Gallery in Big Sur ,
Big Sur Gallery Carmel; in Maine by the Elan
Gallery in Rockland, Ebb Tide in Kennebunkport, and The Stable
Gallery in Damariscotta.
