 "Ancient Oaks"

  Classically trained as a painter in Florence, Julia now divides her time between her two beloved painting meccas—the wild Big Sur coast and the Tuscan hills of Italy.

Living and working suspended between ocean and mountains on a magnificent ranch in central Big Sur, her paintings are a passionate (and endless)  attempt to pay homage to the vastness, to explore the sense of awe, and to express the land’s many moods and forms-- something she considers a very long-term project. One could study for a lifetime and still barely hint at the magic—which seems to be a contradictory blend of  the awesome splendor and the intimate sense of connection that this wild land awakens in a person.

  The paintings in this show were nearly all painted on the large ranch where I live and can daily observe the changing light and seasons on favorite trees, mountainsides, rocky cliffs. I dedicate many canvases to studies of the ancient oak trees who are, sadly, leaving us due to a devastating illness. One gift of the ravaging fires earlier this year, are the sumptuous new hues on the mountains’s flanks at day’s end. These are passion colors, competing with sunset-clouds for best plummage.
